Description

Elderberry – Sambucus canadensis

Elder needs no introduction, a true elder in ethnobotany. A very useful and simply fantastic addition to any landscape. Beautiful vigorous growing shrub boasting 8 or more feet growth every year and can be managed as an annual coppice.

Clusters of creamy flowers are a treat to human and wildlife alike, though the fruiting cymes are what are most often harvested. Elderberries have been long consumed and recently extensively studied for their immune boosting and antiviral properties. Many parts of the plant have been used for the antiviral properties in many cultures.

Varieties available:

Marge-

Marge is a seedling selection from ‘Harshberg’ European elder that has been evaluated for high production in the Midwest. Non suckering habit makes for a more easily managed planting. Flowers occur on second year wood and yield very large berries. Self pollinating.

Wyldewood-

Wyldewood is a high yielding selection made by Jack Millican in 1995 near the community of Brush Hill in east central Oklahoma. Wyldewood has consistently performed well at research plots in Missouri. Blooms in June, ripens over 3 weeks in late July. Large plump berries born on first year and second year wood.

Bob Gordon –

Bob Gordon is a selection from Osceola Missouri of an exceptional elderberry. Large clusters of juicy berries are borne on first year wood and have a helpful habit of drooping and reducing bird predation. Fruiting prolifically and reaching 8 or more feet in one growing season this elder holds its own. Typically managed as an annual coppice, this multi stemmed shrub will fruit on second or third year wood but to a lesser extent than on first year growth.

Dormant Cuttings

These hardwood cutting are a great way to get an elder patch established. You can expect them to contain 2 nodes with a 90 degree cut on top and angled bottom tip. Simply planted in well draining potting mix or directly in the soil, these cuttings will soon grow into stately shrubs that can grow more than 8 feet.
